Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor that occurs predominantly in children and young adults with no gender predilection and anatomic site, usually appearing as a painless swelling. We present a case of an 11-year-old non-Caucasian boy complaining of large painless isolated swelling in the right mandibular body. Intraoral examination revealed a tumoral mass with cortical bone expansion, covered by normal mucosa measuring 4.0 x 2.0 cm, located on both the lingual and buccal surfaces of the right body of the mandible, with displacement of the neighboring teeth. Panoramic radiography revealed an expansile, radiolucent and well circumscribed lesion with scattered foci of calcified material, which contained several radiopaque bodies of varying sizes and shapes. The provisional diagnoses were odontoma or AFO/ Biopsy confirmed AFO. The patient was treated with conservative surgery. After two years of follow-up, no alteration or recurrence was detected

Vascular malformations or even hemangiomas need therapeutic intervention if they start to cause clinical symptoms or personal discomfort. Different therapeutic modalities, including cryotherapy, corticosteroids, laser therapy, sclerotherapy, surgery, and/or embolization, can be performed successfully. Sclerotherapy with monoethanolamine is a relatively simple and effective method to treat low flow vascular lesions. We presented a report of six cases of vascular malformations treated with monoethanolamine. There were 3 male and 3 female patients, with an age range of 20 to 68 years. The patients were submitted to applications according to clinical response and/or tolerability. In all cases, low-flow vascular lesions were recorded and submitted to infiltration with 2.5% monoethanolamine, directly into the lesions. The volume applied was approximately the middle of affected area. Vascular lesions were characterized as low-flow due to absence of arterial pulsation and flat consistence. The sclerosis with 2.5% monoethanolamine resulted in complete or partial involution, without severe complications

Objectives: It was evaluated epidemiological aspects of primary lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and its associations with clinicopathological factors. Study design: This retrospective, cross-sectional study analysed a sociodemographic, clinical, and morphological data of HNSCC in a Brazilian population (n=30). Data analysis included descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses using the chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to compare the variables. Results: The LSCC represented 10.8% of all oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. Lip malignant disease was more prevalent in elderly men, with male-to-female ratio of 5:1. Lower lip was more affected. It was observed high rates of chronic solar exposure, and tobacco and alcohol drinking habits. Clinically, early TNM staging, small tumour lesions, and non-metastatic disease were predominant findings. It was identified a high frequency of well differentiated tumor samples. Worse Karnofsky performance status was associated with cervical metastasis. Conclusions: Our findings showed that LSCC patients exhibited similar epidemiological and clinical profiles as noted in other studies. Still, the occurrence of metastatic disease was associated with a worse physical performance status of the LSCC patients during diagnosis. © Medicina Oral S. L

SummaryThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of HIF-1α genetic polymorphisms and protein expression in the development of metastasis in upper aerodigestive tract cancer (UADTC) patients. The expression of pro-angiogenic markers was also evaluated. Protein expression was analysed using immunohistochemistry, and RFLP analysis was used to investigate HIF-1α C1779T and G1790A polymorphisms in 52 patients with UADTC. Primary lesions were divided into 2 groups according to the absence or presence of metastasis. Lymph node samples were divided into 3 groups: metastatic lymph nodes, non-metastatic lymph nodes (both derived from patients with metastatic disease), and control lymph nodes, which were obtained from patients without any metastasis. The allele T was more frequently found in patients with metastatic disease. HIF-1α protein expression in the lymph nodes was increased in the presence of the T allele. Metastatic lymph nodes showed lower levels of HIF-1α, VEGFR1, and MMP-9 proteins compared to lymph nodes without metastasis, while VEGFR2 protein levels were increased. In agreement, HIF-1α expression was correlated with MMP-9. Cox regression analysis demonstrated that higher HIF-1α and MMP-9 protein expression levels and GA and GG genotypes were associated with poor survival. Our findings show that the C1772T and G1790A polymorphisms of the HIF-1α gene are associated with increased expression of the HIF-1α protein in UADTC. The present data indicate that non-metastatic tissues express higher levels of HIF-1α, VEGFR1, and MMP-9, while in metastatic lymph nodes, VEGFR2 protein expression is elevated. The present study also shows that the HIF-1α G1790A polymorphism and its protein expression have an impact on the prognosis of UADTC patients

Objectives: We attempt to investigate a possible association between periodontal disease (PD) and mental disorders (MD) in a population of Brazilian Police. Study Method: From a total study population consisting of 803 policemen, 345 police officers were obtained by a sample calculation using the finite population correction who were randomly selected in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Patients who had been prescribed steroids or those diagnosed with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases were excluded from this study. The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was used to assess mental disorders. Odds ratios (ORs) for periodontal diseases severity and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. The risk of advanced scores in Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) were estimated using Poisson Regression analyses. Results: Only smoking and age were associated with severity in CAL and CPI index. No relation between MD and PD was observed even in different positions within the police department. Conclusions: It was not observed relation between GHQ 12 and the incidence of Periodontal Disease in a Brazi-lian Police population. Classical factors like age and smoking, however, were associated with CAL and CPI index higher scores in this population. © Medicina Oral S. L

The aim of this study was to verify the acute effect of physical activity in housing with an enriched environment on blood cholesterol, lactate and glucose levels in C57BL/6 mice. This environment consisted of seesaw, wheels, balls and tunnels. Biochemical variables were analyzed in groups of C57BL/6 mice before and immediately after a 30-minute session of physical activity in an enriched environment. In each group, a blood sample was collected for specific evaluation. In group 1 (n=5) the blood lactate level was evaluated; in group 2 (n=5) the blood glucose level was assessed; in group 3 (n=3) the level of total cholesterol was assessed. Physical activity in an enriched environment caused an acute increase in lactatemia (p=0.043) immediately after the experimental session. Regarding blood glucose levels (p=0.684) and total cholesterol (p=0.102), there were no significant changes. The results of this study show that physical activity in accommodation with an enriched environment promotes acute adaptations in the energy supply systems of animals, validating the viability of this methodological proposal as an experimental format for physical activity with rodents.O objetivo desse estudo foi verificar o efeito agudo da atividade física em alojamento com ambiente enriquecido nos níveis de colesterol, lactato e glicose sanguíneos em camundongos C57BL/6. Background: Data obtained from oral health surveys are very important for identifying disease-susceptible groups and for developing dental care and prevention programs. So, the purpose of the current article was to investigate the prevalence of oral mucosa lesions (OMLs) in a population of Brazilian police. Material and Methods: Interviews and oral cavity examinations were performed on a sample of 395 police officers who were randomly selected by the calibrated researcher. The number of individuals was obtained by a sample calculation using the finite population correction. The diagnostic criteria were based on the WHO (1997) criteria and adapted to Brazilian surveys. Results: In total, 8.61% of the population presented some OML. Traumatic injuries and benign migratory glossitis (BMG) were the most prevalent lesions. Conclusions: The prevalence of potentially malignant disorders was lower than among the Brazilian population. The most prevalent lesion among the police officers was related to trauma. Patients dissatisfied with oral health had a higher risk of presenting OMLs

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a vertical ladder device for resistance exercises with or without electrical shock stimulus on muscle strength, body composition, limb volume, muscle fibres and plasma lactate and glycemia of female mice. This device is represented by a vertical ladder with electrostimulation. It was analysed in groups of C57BL/6 mice practicing spontaneous physical activity in enriched environment, practicing resisted climbing exercises, practicing resistance exercises with the utility model in question and controls. The acute effects of blood lactate and dark light-box behaviour, and the short-term chronic effects of muscle strength, limb volume, body composition, muscle fibre area, and central and light-dark quantification were verified. According to the findings, the vertical electrostimulation ladder model presented acute effects on lactate levels, similar to other experimental models of resistance exercise and physical activity. The behaviour in the light-dark box test showed no difference between the groups. Regarding the short-term chronic response, the best results were obtained in the impact-stimulated resistive exercise in the limb traction muscle variables, greater brown adipose tissue weight, greater quadriceps femoral muscle structure, limb and greater weight number of nuclei in the skeletal striated muscle fibres. The use of the prototype showed similarities in the acute and chronic adaptations expected in resistance training. However, new study proposals should be encouraged, as the data presented here are the first notes on the use of this utility model. We would like to thank the Foundation for Research Support of the Minas Gerais State (FAPEMIG; grant numbers: PPM-00029-17 and DEG-00010-16); National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq, grant number: 150038/2017-8 and 430759/2016-9); and the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) for the support to carry out this study.
